Mixer Trim Knobs and Pre-Amps

Turning the trim knob on your mixer to the right actually activates an internal pre-amp within the mixer. Depending on the make and model of your mixer, the pre-amp can sound quite good. If you don’t like the sound of the pre-amp, consider an off-board, external pre-amp. On some mixers, turning the trim knob all the way to the left will turn the internal pre-amp off. Consult the owners manual of your mixer before you hook up an external pre-amp, as you will need to find a way to bypass the built in, internal mic pre before you can use an external.
