The Source of Your Sound

Where it all begins: the source... So what's the most important part of your recording setup? The recorder, the microphones, or the preamps? These links in your recording chain are certainly important, but having class-A everything will be a moot point if the source you are recording sounds poor. It all begins with the source of the sound, whether it be a guitar amp or a drum set. Of course, the bottom line with your gear is going to be this: you only have what you have - but make sure to take a full inventory. The fact you don't OWN the sweetest guitar rig in the world doesn't necessarily mean you don't HAVE ACCESS to such a rig - or at least something nicer than what you own. You do have friends, right? OK, so maybe that kid with the Marshall JCM2000 TSL who can't play a note is just an acquaintance, but it can be worth a small rental fee (or other bribery tactics - read on) to get that sweet tone, and people are less likely to wince at loaning equipment out for a recording session than they are for a live show -especially if you sweeten the pot with a fresh set of tubes for their amp (or heads for their drums). If that doesn't work, promise them credit on your CD as Executive Producer.
