Omnidirectional
Microphones. The first microphone polarity pattern is the omnidirectional
pattern. As its name implies, omnidirectional microphones will pick up
sound coming at it from any direction. Omnidirectional mics are used in
situations where you want to capture not only the sound of the source,
but the sound of the room as well. Omni’s are used in pairs (stereo) to
record drums, orchestras, and large vocal groups. Omnidirectional microphones
are not used for close miking as the background noise they would pick up
would be annoying.
