For those of
you who have already gone out and bought a large diaphragm condenser mic
simply because you knew at some stage you would need one, allow us to help
you with those little micro-switches…Seriously, many of us have no idea
what they do or why they’re there. First: the switch that reads 0Db, -6Db
is not a pad or attenuation switch. This is a bass roll-off switch for
use when you are close miking and the proximity effect is giving you too
much low end. Second: the switch with the alien looking symbols by it?
That’s your polarity pattern switch. The symbol that looks like an O is
for the omnidirectional patterns, the symbol that looks like a flattened
O is the cardioid pattern, and the symbol that looks like a figure 8 is
for the bidirectional pattern. Know this also, the O setting on a large
diaphragm condenser mic will not sound the same as a true omnidirectional
mic. Sometimes there simply is no substitute for the real thing…
