Impedance
Matching: If you want to run your electric guitar or bass straight into
your mixer, you need to ensure that you have an impedance match. Almost all
electric
guitars and basses are configured with a ¼ inch high impedance output.
(You can tell by looking at the jack. If it’s a ¼ inch jack, then its high
impedance. If it’s a 3 pin XLR, then it’s a low impedance.) Many of the mixers
available today have XLR low impedance inputs. If you need to match the two, then
you need a Direct Box. A direct box is a handy little device that allows you to
change the impedance of the signal from your guitars and basses, and thus avoid
the ‘thin’ guitar sound or excessive noise resulting from an impedance mismatch.
This device will also allow you to change the output from your guitar from a ¼ inch
jack to a 3 pin XLR configuration.
