| The
"dead" recording space: for guitar, vocals, solo
instruments, sometimes drums... When you set up a microphone
to record your source, the two main things going into that
microphone will be the direct sound from the source itself
and the interaction of that sound with the room. Generally,
when recording solo instruments (guitar, vocals, tambourine,
etc) with a microphone, most engineers keep that fact in mind,
opting for a room with bone-dry acoustics. This type of space
is sometimes desirable in the context of drums when the engineer
chooses to put a microphone on every element of a drum kit.
Such a space will have very few hard, reflective surfaces,
often outfitted with absorptive materials like shag carpeted
floor, heavy draperies on the windows (if there are any),
and acoustic tiles on the walls and ceiling - in short, a
black hole from which no reflections will escape into a microphone.
