Condenser Microphones
are at the heart of many studios, home and professional. Condenser mics
are sensitive and accurate, but also really expensive. At the heart of
the condenser mic is an extremely thin metal (or Mylar coated plastic or
metal) diaphragm. This diaphragm is suspended in front of a metal plate
called a back-plate. When polarizing voltage is applied to both of these
elements, a static charge is created in the space between them. When the
diaphragm picks up a sound, in vibrates into the static field, producing
a small signal that can then be amplified. All condenser mics require phantom
power.
