Frequency Response of
Bidirectional Ribbon Microphones

Here’s a fun fact for you about bidirectional ribbon microphones. While most bidirectional condenser mics will have the same frequency response on each side, some ribbon bidirectional microphones will give you a very different response depending on which side is pointed towards the source. For example, a Royer r121 mic will pick up a good deal more high frequencies from the back than the front. You can use this to your advantage when recording instruments that are giving you too much low end, as simply turning the mic 180 degrees will solve the problem.
