About
Preamps. Most quality Mics today have a lower output than line level devices
(Keyboards, guitars, drum machines, etc.) Therefore they will need their signal
boosted a bit before it gets to the mixer. This is where the Pre-Amp comes into
play. Pre-amps can be internal or external, depending on your mixer (and your
budget!) Many professional audio engineers have a wide variety of pre-amps to
choose from, as the pre-amp that gets used will affect the sound significantly.
Therefore, the pre-amp not only boosts the signal, it also ‘sweetens’ or ‘fattens’
the sound as well.
