Tube
Pre Amps. The
second of the three types of mic pre-amps available today are the tube preamps.
Tube mic pre’s
use the amplifying power of a vacuum tube to boost the signal from the mic.
Vacuum tubes are renowned for the ‘warmth’ of the sounds that they produce.
While the
‘warmth’ is actually distortion, it is a very pleasing sound, and works well
to mitigate the common complaint of the intrinsic ‘harshness’ of digital recording.
Tube mic pre’s are most commonly used when recording Rock and Blues. They are
also excellent for recording drums.
