| Where
it all begins: pre-pre-production details... Amidst the all
the discussion of recording gear and technique, a very important
aspect that often gets overlooked in the recording process
is the readiness of the actual material and performers. Everything
sounds great in rehearsal while you're in the moment, but
the only way to objectively know what you sound like as a
whole is to listen to it when you aren't playing it - through
a recording. Not the big recording you've been gearing up
for, of course. Just a quickie demo/rehearsal recording, or
for that matter, a series of them. It doesn't have to be beautiful
- merely audible, with a decent amount of detail. This is
where the 4-track cassette shines - quick, easy, and cheap
re-useable media. Sit down amongst your bandmates and listen
to these recordings - and not right after your rehearsal.
Before everyone re-convenes to critically discuss the results
of the rehearsal demo, everyone should get a copy to listen
to on their own time, come into it with a fresh set of ears,
and be honest about what works and what doesn't.
