Nyquist Frequency Explained

Nyquist Frequency. When you are shopping for digital studios, you may on occasion hear a salesperson refer to something know as the Nyquist Frequency, named after the man who discovered it, Mr. Harry Nyquist. What this number refers to is the highest frequency (pitch) that a sample is capable of representing. Nyquist discovered that this number is always exactly half of the sample rate. In other words, if you have a sample rate of 48 kHz, you will be able to accurately record and represent frequencies up to 24 kHz. Still, not to worry: Humans can only hear frequencies up to 20 kHz.
