| Isolating
multiple elements in one room... Here's your objective: using
microphones, record multiple elements in an ensemble simultaneously,
but make sure all the microphones are acoustically isolated
from each other. The catch: you only have one room to work
with. What to do? This sounds like a job for... The Gobo!
The gobo (short for go-between) is a moveable partition that
can be strategically placed between your microphone sources,
minimizing what is known as microphone bleed. Gobos are easy
to custom-build using 2 x 4s and plywood, using carpet or
acoustic foam/tile for surface treatment. Sometimes, a layer
of sheet rock between the plywood and the 2 x 4s is employed:
the higher the density, the better. Screws are preferable
to nails for fasteners. It also doesn't hurt to use some kind
of silicone sealant between the panels and the frame members
to minimize any noise that could result from vibration.
