About Digital Preamps. The first of the three types of pre-amps available today is the solid state, or digital. Solid state mic pre’s use transistors to boost the incoming signal. Solid state pre-amps are known primarily for the clear and open sound that they produce. For this reason, solid state mic pre’s are sued most for recording acoustic and classical music. (Note: some solid state mic pre’s are designed to let the user overdrive the unit, producing distortion. The caveat is this: solid state distortion is undesirable everywhere else. Why would it be good here?)
