Cardioid Microphones

Cardioid Microphones. The second microphone polarity pattern is the cardioid. This is the polarity pattern that most of us are familiar with, as by for and away the larger percentage of microphones sold in the world today are cardioid microphones. A cardioid mic will accept sound coming from the front of it, and reject sound coming from behind. The result is a pattern shaped roughly like a heart, ergo the name cardioid. Although there are three types of cardioid polarity patterns (cardioid, super cardioid, and hyper cardioid) the difference between the three is not very great. Most dynamic mics are cardioid. Cardioid microphones are used in close miking situations and most live applications to minimize feedback.
