About Gain

Gain is all about achieving the optimal signal to noise ratio. Not enough gain, and you have the basic noise floor of your unit without enough signal. Too much gain, and you begin creating new noise in the form of distortion. It sounds much simpler in theory than it is in practice, but the goal is to get as close as you can to the distortion line without crossing over.

In a typical signal path, you have multiple opportunities to add gain – and distortion. For example, in a typical set up you can add gain (and distortion) with at the mic preamp and then again with the fader. To keep your signal as clean as possible, choose one stage in the signal path at which you add gain, and set the others at a “zero” level to neither add nor remove gain.
